What are Ingrown Toenails?
Ingrown toenail occurs when the side of a toenail grows into the flesh. The condition usually affects the great toe. Pain, redness, and swelling can occur at the affected nail.
What is Ingrown Toenail Surgery?
Ingrown toenail surgery is wedge resection of the toe nail with chemical (phenol) cauterization of the nail matrix to prevent regrowth.
The procedure will take approximately 45mins
Podiatrist will assess the toe/s.
Two injections of local anaesthetic are given to numb the toe
Once the toe is numbing, a tourniquet is placed around base of the toe to control any bleeding
Toe prepped with antiseptic
In a partial nail avulsion (PNA) a slither of nail/s is taken off from the side. In a total nail avulsion (TNA) the whole nail is removed.
To prevent re-growth, a chemical (phenol) is applied to the nail bed of the nail that has been removed
You will be able to leave, and walk after the procedure. Not permitted to drive.
Can anyone receive this treatment?
With a few exceptions, most people with chronic ingrown toenails would be able to have this treatment. Your Podiatrist will carry out an assessment prior to treatment and be able to advise you on this.
