What Is an Ingrown Toenail?

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, most commonly affecting the big toe. This can cause:

• Pain
• Redness
• Swelling
• Infection

If left untreated, symptoms often worsen and become recurrent.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

Ingrown toenail surgery — also known as partial nail avulsion (PNA) with phenolisation — involves removing the affected portion of the nail and applying a chemical solution (phenol) to prevent regrowth.

The procedure typically takes approximately 45 minutes and includes:

  • Assessment of the affected toe
  • Administration of local anaesthetic (two small injections)
  • Placement of a tourniquet to control bleeding
  • Antiseptic preparation
  • Removal of the affected nail portion (partial nail avulsion) or entire nail (total nail avulsion, if required)
  • Application of phenol to prevent regrowth

You will be able to walk immediately after the procedure. However, you will need someone to drive you home.

Who Is Suitable?

Most patients with chronic or recurrent ingrown toenails are suitable candidates. A comprehensive assessment will be performed to ensure safety and confirm the most appropriate treatment option.
